In this First-Year Odyssey seminar (FYOS), we explore the origins of the traditional “back of the baseball card” statistics (think home runs, batting average, ERA, and strikeouts) as well as the modern “Sabermetric” numbers (think WAR, OPS+, and FIP) that attempt to quantify every aspect of a player’s performance and account for changing historical and environmental factors. We look back through the lens of these metrics at historical greats (how good a hitter was Ted Williams, really?!) and use them to understand today’s superstars in a historical context (who would you rather have on your team, Shohei Ohtani or Babe Ruth?!). We also use statistics to explore which Hall of Famers probably do not belong and who might have been overlooked for enshrinement.
